Go Ahead! Be Your Own Online Customer!

No one wants your ecommerce site to be more successful than you; I’m sure we both agree on that. After all, global online sales exceeded $4 trillion in 2020 and you’d like what you see as your fair share of that.

The most common question I get every day is: What makes a site become a sales generating ‘ATM’? I’m flattered that people see me as an online authority. I guess that comes from being responsible for more than 20 successful ecommerce sites between those I own and those my team and I support.

There is no one special sauce that helps the most successful ecommerce sites flourish, but...one thing is certain. Winning sites have mastered the ease of the end-to-end customer journey.

The entire online buying experience must be smooth and welcoming. That experience starts the moment a visitor seeks out your site and doesn’t conclude until they experience satisfaction interacting with your product.

Successful ecommerce sites all recognize one very important fact. For as many of 60% of potential customers, their customer journey starts on one type of device, like a laptop, and concludes on another, like a smartphone or a tablet.

If you haven’t been a customer on your own ecommerce website, don’t wait another day. I’m confident that you will be surprised at all you’ll learn.

Start by searching for the products or services that you offer. After all, isn’t that where many of your potential customers would start?

Then visit your website, from your laptop, your smartphone and your tablet. Did it load quickly and do you like what you first see?

By now, you get the idea…be your customer every step along the way. From reviewing your offerings to putting things in your cart to handing over your cash, experience what they experience.

Odds are there are lots of things you’d want to improve as a result of engaging in this invaluable experience. If you take solid notes along the way, you will already be making progress.

So what’s the next step from there? Prioritize the ways that you are going to attack improving your website and get to work. You’ll be glad you did. There are few better sounds than hearing your online ‘ATM machine’ hum.
